Forestry operations in NSW are meant to follow strict rules around endangered species, habitat trees, waterways, and ecosystem integrity - but those rules are often ignored, weakly enforced, or manipulated. Pre-harvest surveys are frequently inadequate, outdated, or conducted in the wrong season.

Forestry cannot be trusted to mark their own homework. That’s where we come in.

By conducting our own surveys, we:

• Search for threatened species like koalas, greater gliders, frogs and quolls before logging starts

• Verify old growth and rainforest classifications to prevent illegal logging

• Document breaches of forestry rules and submit official complaints

• Perform water and soil testing for signs of logging-related pollution

• Contribute data to public research and legal campaigns

Citizen science can take many forms, depending on your skills and interests:

• Spotlighting for gliders and possums at night

• Setting up or checking motion-sensor cameras

• Surveying trees for hollows, scratches, scats or nests

• Mapping forest types and identifying key habitat features

• Waterway and erosion monitoring

• GPS mapping and report writing

• Helping compile data for media and legal advocacy

We’ll provide all the training and gear you need. You don’t need a science degree - just curiosity, attention to detail, and a good headlamp.

What we find on the ground can mean the difference between a forest being logged or saved. Countless coupes have had logging paused or halted altogether thanks to citizen science uncovering unreported threatened species and habitat features.

When done in conjunction with direct action, citizen science becomes a powerful shield - halting destruction, giving lawyers evidence to work with, and building the case for broader protection.
